HISTORY:  I was introduced to flying at Wild Rose, a beautiful Class G airport with North/South, East/West grass-strip runways hidden among the pine trees and farm fields of Wisconsin.  My husband and I purchased an Eipper Weight Shift Ultralight from Don Gibbs, area ultralight pilot, and proceeded to take lessons from him.  Since it's a single-seat only craft, we would meet at the airport when the winds were 3 knots or less.  Don would stand at the end of the runway and give a set of instructions:  "Taxi to the end of the runway and back … OK.  Now this time shift your weight back and fly just a foot off the runway then shift your weight forward and land … OK.  Now do these crow-hops as many times as you can each direction…."  and well, I have been hooked on flight lessons ever since:
  • Private Pilot - Eagle River, WI
  • Instrument Rating - Rhinelander, WI
  • Commercial License - Waupaca, WI
  • Certified Flight Instructor - Appleton, WI
  • CFI Instrument - Norman, OK
  •
Prior to September 11, 2001,  I was preparing for an interview as a career pilot with American Eagle. At that time only 50 hours of twin time was needed to complete the resume.  As luck would have it, I was just 35 hours into my first professional flight job as a cargo pilot when all planes were grounded for the first time in our national history.

After 3 days of waiting in Jumers hotel in Moline, Illinois, all Part 135 pilots flying checks were called back to the skies.  America's economic heart had been halted and it was time to begin the economic healing of America.  That night  I was clearned to taxi - to takeoff-and  to land at Midway Airfield from one departure clearance.  The night sky was silent nationawide but for a few working voices.

One hundred hours later, I had to make a choice to quit American Airlines; the company that provided the salary and benefits needed to pay for the flight training expenses that landed me here;  or fly full time in an industry that would be signifcantly wounded for a long time resulting in furloughs and significant cuts in pay, benefits, pensions and protective unions? Since I entered the field late, I chose  to keep my seniority pay, benefits and the ticket to the world as an American Airlines flight attendant and find another way to massage my flight addiction.   I turned to flight training for the first time in 15years and discovered I loved it!

The National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) takes pride in announcing a significant aviation accomplishment on the part of Wanda Zuege, the owner of Am I High Aviation and a resident of Custer, WI.  Recently, Wanda was accredited as a Master CFI (Certificated Flight Instructor) by NAFI, her professional aviation education association.

To help put these achievements in their proper perspective, there are approximately 90,000 CFIs in the United States.  Fewer than 500 of them have achieved that distinction thus far.  The last twelve national Flight Instructors of the Year were Master CFIs while Wanda is one of only 11 Wisconsin aviation educators who has earned this prestigious "Master" title.  In the words of FAA Administrator Marion Blakey, "The flight instructor is where the rubber meets the runway.  The Master Instructor accreditation singles out the best that the right seat has to offer."

The Master Instructor designation is a national accreditation recognized by the FAA that is earned by candidates through a rigorous process of continuing professional activity and peer review.  Much like a flight instructor's certificate, it must be renewed biennially.  This process parallels the continuing education regimen used by other professionals to enhance their knowledge base while increasing their professionalism.  Simply put, the Master Instructor designation is a means by which to identify those outstanding aviation educators, those "Teachers of Flight," who have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to excellence, professional growth, and service to the aviation community.

Earning this designation is tantamount to having the words summa cum laude emblazoned on an instructor's certificate.  These Masters truly represent the crème de la crème of our industry!  To publicly recognize these individuals and their noteworthy accomplishments, NAFI will be hosting its "Meet the Masters" breakfasts, to which Wanda will be invited, during EAA's AirVenture in Oshkosh and Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland.  Any support that can be provided will be appreciated.

NAFI is dedicated to providing support and recognition for America's aviation educators while helping them raise and maintain their level of professionalism.  It is also committed to providing a safe and effective learning environment for student pilots.  The Association was founded in 1967 and affiliated with EAA in 1995.
