The typical student pilot should strongly consider the purchase of a 25/250/250 ($25,000 bodily injury/ $250,000 injury to people and non-owned property/$250,000 aircraft damage) policy. Such coverage provides a level of protection for students and covers the minimum insurance requirements to meet state regulations, with $5000 extra coverage for physical damage to the non-owned aircraft. Above rates $175 as an AOPA member. $185 as a non-member rate.
While non-owned coverage will usually cover any deductible payments, this is not its principal function. Non-owned coverage is designed to protect the renter and help insulate the commercial operator from losses. Additionally, such coverage helps keep you and your FBO from developing an adversarial relationship if the FBO's airplane is wrecked or damaged.
