RAIN - SLEET - SNOW!!!!
Preflight Planning Prevents Predictably Poor  Performance

     RAIN - SLEET - SNOW

Patricia (IFR student) and I completed 15 hours on the simulator; waited two days for VFR flying weather to arrive over Wisconsin and flew south to get out of Wisconsin's glacial weather.

Seven IFR-flight-training-hours later, we ended up in Arkansas excited about completing the IFR rating in spite of the Wisconsin weather.  Prior to ending the day, a preflight of the weather for the following morning revealed RAIN-SLEET-SNOW all around us. The 6Ps (Preflight Planning Prevents Predictably Poor Performance) gave us time to find a hangar to house the Cherokee and return to Stevens Point via American Eagle before the ice storm arrived.

Helmet Fire
The term helmet fire is used jokingly to say that the pilot is undergoing so much stress that his brain is on fire or smoke is coming out of his ears.
After passage of the above ice storm, Rusty agreed to accompany me back to North West Arkansas to pick up the Cherokee. The return trip was his first flight (600 miles) solely by reference to instruments.

Airmanship starts on the ground:  Here are a few online interactive courses designed to help pilots understand conditions and hazards of inflight icing, and to develop strategies to minimize inflight icing risks.

 KidVenture at Stevens Point

November 14, 2009: KidVenture at Stevens Point, an aviation educational program sponsored by Am I High Aviation, LLC, featured lessons on aerodynamics, engines, flight instruments, human factors, engines, FAA regulations, airport operations, weather, and navigation.  The experience parallels actual pilot training.

When all educational stations are visited, the young eagles are qualified to take flight on a 20 minute airplane ride as part of the EAA Young Eagles program.

At the end of the day, they are awarded a Young Eagles Certificate and an official FAA logbook, compliments of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Thank you pilots and volunteers for giving up your Saturday to pass on the wonder of flight to eager young spirits.  This event would not be possible without you:  Thanks to Kerry Johnson, Coordinator for the Education Talent Search, a federally-funded pre-college program through the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley for bussing middle school students to Stevens Point, Joe Wheeler, Airport Manager, for the use of the new hangar; John Thompson - Flight Specialist Sim Instructor, Lorne Thurier - FBO orientation, Fred Krause - Navigation Educator, Jonathan Pearce - Instrument Instructor, Jeramy Beaudry - Weather Educator, Dennis Valcq and Bill Savka - Welcome Team, Susana and Maria Gorski - Aerodynamics Educators, William Riemer - Official Photographer and Engine Educator, Jim Duffy - Flight Specialist Sim Instructor, Jeremy Johnson - Airport Operations Educator, Christal Engle - Preflight Educator, Jim Johnson - Human Factors, Christine Pagenkopf and Bethany Mapes - graciously assisted where needed.
